Post-doctoral position in global ecology

The Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral associate in global ecology. The position is for research on permafrost feedbacks to the global carbon cycle. A number of recent studies highlight the possibility that warming could lead to large-scale melting of permafrost, which could lead to decomposition of previously frozen organic matter, accelerating the rate of increase of atmospheric CO2. At present, neither the stock of potentially vulnerable carbon nor the sensitivity of the permafrost to warming is well constrained. The goal of this research is evaluating this feedback, through data synthesis and modeling. The research will involve permafrost carbon modeling, linking decomposition and methane production to ice dynamics and thermokarst. The long-term goal is implementing a permafrost carbon module in a coupled climate/carbon model. Available funding is for 2 years, with the possibility of extension. Qualifications include a PhD in some aspect of Earth System Sciences (ecology, geography, geophysics) and research experience with biogeochemical and climate modeling. To apply for the position, please send a letter of application, a cv, and names of three references to Christopher Field, Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution, 260 Panama Street, Stanford CA 94305. Application materials can be submitted electronically to cfield@globalecology.stanford.edu. Applications received by 1 October will receive full consideration. Later applications may be considered. The Carnegie Institution of Washington is a non-profit organization that conducts basic scientific research. It is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer.
